Nothing Fishy About Success of UA Engineering Design Day 2013

The University of Arizona’s Engineering Design Day gets bigger and better every year. This year more than 300 engineering seniors presented about 60 faculty-, industry- and club-sponsored projects, a number of which were nearly ready to make their debut in real life.

“Our sponsors are really figuring out what makes the best types of projects,” said Ara Arabyan, UA professor of mechanical engineering and coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Program, which organizes Design Day.

First-place winner of Best Overall Design, the robotic fish, proved to be a favorite not only among the industry judges but also among big and little kids alike who attended the 11th annual College of Engineering Design Day on April 30, 2013 at the Tucson Marriott University Park. Visitors to aquariums around the world may soon be using joysticks to guide the robotic fish in underwater environments as they learn about aquatic habitats through the eyes of a fish via high-definition streaming video. SSES Prof. Robert Erdmann currently a Fellow-in-Residence at NIAS in the Netherlands

Dr. Robert Erdmann, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), is currently a Fellow-in-Residence at NIAS, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the humanities and social sciences. Each year, the Institute invites around 50 carefully selected scholars, both from within and outside the Netherlands, to its center in Wassenaar where they are given the opportunity to do research over a ten-month or five-month period. Fellows carry out their research either as individuals or as part of a research theme group. NIAS Fellows are selected from prominent researchers and senior scholars in the humanities and social sciences, who have already made a contribution to their field. Further reading.
